When Jesus was teaching his followers about Christian living (Luke 6:17-26), he pointed out the contrasts of a believer's life. He points out four (4) contrasts in particular: 1) Spiritually poor yet very rich; 2) Spiritually hungry yet very satisfied; 3) Spiritually weeping yet full of laughter; and 4) Persecuted yet greatly rewarded. The words Jesus speaks here are very similar to those he spoke in his Sermon on the Mount. It's important to note that these words are spoken to believers - people already following Jesus. It isn't necessary to teach us what we must do to be saved. Instead he's teaching us how believers must live to thank God for his loving mercy.
Mission Statement of Christ Evangelical Lutheran Church: It is the will of God: That we will all be his witnesses to spread the Good News that Jesus our Savior brought us peace with God through the forgiveness of sins for all people. That we proclaim the Law and Gospel as revealed in Holy Scriptures to lead all people to repent of sin and to believe in Jesus, who died for our sins and rose to give us eternal life. That we be strengthened in faith and Christian living by worship, communion, continuing instruction, prayer, and fellowship to be better stewards and witnesses.
